One cubic mile of oil (CMO) corresponds very closely to the world’s current total annual consumption of crude oil. The world’s total annual energy consumption — from all energy sources — is currently about three CMO. By the middle of this century, the world will need between six and nine CMO of energy per year to provide for its citizens. A Cubic Mile of Oil describes the various energy sources and how we use them, projects their future contributions, and delineates what it would take to develop them to annually produce a CMO from each of them. The authors also examine how improved efficiency and conservation measures can reduce future demand substantially, and help distinguish approaches that make a significant impact as opposed to merely making us feel good.

"An original, illuminating and entertaining way to experience the energy debate. Cubic Mile is more than an introduction to a new unit of measurement. It is an encyclopedic embrace of energy issues, with dispassionate but compelling analysis of the energy conundrum."
Neil Reynolds, The Globe and Mail

Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada’s Oilsands

By Ezra Levant

In Ethical Oil, author Ezra Levant focuses his attention on the ethical cost of our addiction to oil. While many North Americans may be aware of the financial and environmental price we pay for a gallon of gas or a barrel of oil, Levant argues that it is time we consider ethical factors as well. With his trademark candor, Levant asks hard-hitting questions: With the oilsands at our disposal, is it ethically responsible to import our oil from the Sudan, Russia and Mexico? How should we weigh carbon emissions with human rights violations in Saudi Arabia? And assuming that we can’t live without oil, can the development of energy be made more environmentally sustainable?

“Exposes the lies and hypocrisy of the media-coddled opponents of the vast resource, but raises the uncomfortable question of what alternatives to the oilsands these moralists prefer.”
Peter Foster, Financial Post

In September 2010, Peter Silverstone published a book entitled World’s Greenest Oil, following his independent research of all the issues around greenhouse gases and “dirty oil.” Following this, he believes that every Albertan needs to act to ensure that continued development of the oilsands occurs, but that it does so in an environmentally sustainable manner. If you feel the same way, or if you want to investigate or comment on any of the issues discussed in this article, please visit www.greenestoil.com. There you will also have the opportunity to complete a petition asking the Alberta government to consider the change to the royalty rate that he suggests.

Peter Silverstone is a practicing physician and professor at the University of Alberta, and is currently also vice-chair of Edmonton Economic Development Corporation. He has founded small businesses, and been a senior vice-president at a billion-dollar company. He is completely independent and has no relationships with the oil industry, environmental groups or any political party.

"World's Greenest Oil" was featured in A SOLUTION FOR 'DIRTY OIL' IN WHICH EVERYONE WINS, which can be found on page 7 of Energize Alberta | Nov-Dec, 2010.
